How to Wash a New Car
Frequent washing is the most effective way to keep maintain a new-car finish. Unfortunately, it’s also easy to do incorrectly. In fact, the chances of accidentally scratching or degrading your car’s finish are high if you don’t know what you’re doing.
So, how do you wash a new car? Here are some do’s and don’ts to follow.
Do: Use a Car-Wash Product
If you’re going to wash your car, you should use a car-wash product that was specifically designed for use on automotive paint. That’s because it’s milder than any other cleaner, which can strip off your car’s paint or protective wax.
Before you use this product, rinse all surfaces off with water. This will remove any dirt or debris that could scratch the car. Then soak a large sponge or lambs-wool mitt in your car-wash solution, work the solution into a lather with plenty of suds, and begin to wash.
Wash one section at a time, and make sure it’s fully rinsed before you move onto the next section. Start at the top of the car and work your way around the car.
Don’t move your sponge in circles. This will cause swirl marks, which are unsightly little scratches. Instead, move the sponge lengthwise as you go across the hood and body panels.
Do you have grease, rubber, or tar around your wheel wells or the lower edge of the car? Then you may want to use a stronger product like bug-and-tar remover and wheel cleaner. You’ll also want to use a separate sponge from the one you used on the body of the car.
Don’t: Use Household Products
It can be tempting to try and clean your car with a cleaner you have at home. But you should never use cleaning agents like dish detergent, glass cleaner, or soap on car paint. These things aren’t meant for car paint and could ultimately strip the protective wax from the car.
Do: Bring it to a Car Wash
Does this process seem like a lot of work? Not sure you can commit to it regularly? Then you should just bring it to a car wash!
A car wash can do all this work for you in a fraction of the time at an affordable price. They can even detail your car so it looks as fresh as possible!
